The Tool Grinder performs duties to set up and operate one or more grinders to perform a wide range of tool grinding operations. The Tool Grinder works from blueprints, specifications, piece parts and instructions. All roles provide promotional opportunities within the organization. Duties include but are not limited to:


1. Braze materials and tools in preparation for grinding operations.

2. Operate lathe to establish centers after brazing, as necessary.

3. Set up equipment to perform internal, external, surface, broach, hob, drill pointing and other similar grinding operations on steel and carbide tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, cutters, circular and multiple form tools, gauges, shafts, spindles or special items.

4. Plan sequences of operations, select method of holding workpiece, and verify dimensions, tolerance, tooling and grinding requirements. In addition, selecting and dressing wheels to specifications.

5. Mount grinding wheels, set grind, rotation, and spindle speeds, feed rates, angle of wheel, length of cycle or stroke and depth of cut.

6. Position blades, cams, diamonds and stops; measure workpiece to determine amount of material to be removed, and position on table, face plate or magnetic chuck in fixture or chuck jaws, between cutters and wheels.

7. Start machine, engage automatic mechanisms, direct flow of coolant and observe operations.

8. Perform secondary operations to obtain high finish requirements.

9. Obtain first piece inspection approval.

10. Make adjustments in order to ensure proper operations.

11. Check work for conformance to specifications and place in designated location.

12. Maintain equipment, clean, oil, change worn wheels and ensure that safety devices are operative.

13. Complete paperwork and prepare reports.

14. Provide assistance, guidance and support to other personnel.

15. Notify supervisor of unusual equipment or operating problems.

16. Use micrometer, caliper, comparator, personal computer, height gauge, band saw, various machine tools and measuring instruments, hand truck, and hand tools.

17.Follow safety rules and keep work area in a clean and orderly condition.
